White Space Broadband Rapidly Ramping Up to Become a Reality

December 15, 2011 - Arcata, CA - So much is happening in the TV White Space world it’s almost hard to keep up. Even companies on the front lines like Carlson are operating at lightning speed to stay on top of it all.

In fact, this week, Jim Carlson, CEO of Carlson Wireless, is attending the highly anticipated Cambridge Trials as a resident expert and purveyor of the leading white space radio product.

Spectrum Bridge, one of Carlson’s new database collaborators, is a primary participant, as is Neul, Carlson’s software partner in the development of their new RuralConnect IP Generation II product.

Simultaneously, Electronic Design Magazine just selected the Carlson/Neul product, RuralConnect IP as the Best Wireless Device of 2011. This award is a significant testament to the validity of this new technology.

“We are honored that Electronic Design recognizes our work and that this pioneering product is listed among all the other innovative designs,” said Carlson.

The award came on the heels of a series of very successful white space demonstrations at several key conferences where Carlson coordinated with both Telcordia and Spectrum Bridge to show how smoothly the system works in every respect and with multiple database providers.

In an effort to educate the industry on the many benefits of white space broadband, particularly for rural communities, Carlson recently participated in a webinar in conjunction with Spectrum Bridge and WISPA, entitled “Commercial TV White Space Solutions.” The focus of the webinar was to inform the nearly 200 attendees on new developments of TV white spaces, market opportunities, product applications and what we can expect in the near future.

TV white space promises to be the ultimate solution to spectrum shortage and current rural broadband limitations. Due to the strong propagation of UHF signal, it is the first wireless broadband technology that can be effectively and affordably deployed in rugged, forested terrain.

Carlson’s RuralConnect IP II is set to hit the open market in the first quarter of 2012 and will be the first viable production product of its kind. Wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) from all over the country have already claimed the first 1000 pieces of the product run. WISPS are keen to deploy this technology within their area in order to deliver service to everyone from local neighborhoods to critical industries with remote operations.

Stay tuned as more developments occur in this fast-moving field every single day.
